What Is Coaching And Why Is Coaching Essential?

While all of the previously discussed strategies are beneficial, oftentimes more resources are needed to help overcome specific life obstacles, especially when we are our own obstacle. We can have all the ideas, goals, and strategies in the world, but the vast majority of us still struggle to execute on those ideas, goals, and strategies due to blocks developed over time such as limiting beliefs, self-doubt, and fear of failure. This is where coaching can be invaluable.

Why & How?

Coaches provide guidance, accountability, and support to a client during the process of conquering their challenges, which ultimately helps the client regain their empowerment, achieve success, and transform their life. It is important to note however, that coaching is NOT therapy. Coaching does NOT involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association, and coaching is NOT to be used as a substitute for services provided by qualified professionals such as lawyers, doctors, financial advisors, or mental health professionals.

Professional Athletes Use Coaches. With that said, countless professional athletes, even the athletes making hundreds of millions of dollars, seek the guidance and assistance of all types of coaches to take their physical and mental abilities to a higher level. I constantly hear professional athletes give credit publicly to their coaches after their achievements. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Peyton Manning are just a few examples of athletes that played for coaches or retained coaches during their careers to help them achieve massive success. There is undoubtedly a coach behind every successful athlete. Therefore, if the most successful and gifted athletes in the world utilize coaches, then we can and should use coaches as well.

Other Professionals Use Coaches. CEOs, executives, professionals, managers, and Fortune 500 companies have also retained the services of coaches and consultants to achieve more success. This begs the question… why don’t more people seek the assistance of coaches? The answers are simple. Most people do not even know what a coach does or how a coach could help them. Furthermore, we do not hear a lot about coaching services being provided to others because it is a confidential process. This confidential process promotes a safe space for the client to explore and discover the ways to achieve what they want, and to avoid what they do not want.

Lastly, many people do not disclose to others that a coach was retained to help them overcome challenges because of the fear of being perceived by others as weak or incapable. This is very unfortunate because enlisting a coach’s services should be a very proud moment as it often signifies the first step in the transformational process. The aforementioned negative stigma really troubles me when I think about all of the people that fail to achieve their full potential just because of a possible negative perception held by another. For me personally, achieving my full potential makes another’s perception of me irrelevant because I feel at peace and aligned with my values and goals regardless of whatever assistance I needed and requested along the way.

My Coaching Experience

I enlisted the assistance of several coaches over the last couple of years, and I can personally attest as to how transformational the coaching process is. We as humans all have blocks that can hinder our success, whether we are aware of the blocks or not. Many people describe encountering these blocks as feeling “stuck” or “trapped” when their situation reaches a peak discomfort level. It is analogous to having one foot on the gas while the other foot is on the brake. Our conscious mind, which is full of active thoughts, wants to move forward and take action, but our subconscious mind, which is full of deeply rooted beliefs, is holding us back. Uncovering the blind spot is only half of the battle, but the exciting news is that we can reprogram the conscious and subconscious parts of our brain as this is a learned skill just like riding a bike.

With the rapidly evolving business environment since the pandemic, including the advent of AI, I truly believe that coaching is now more important than ever. We cannot afford to be left behind as a result of our limiting beliefs. A coach can help us achieve our goals and conquer the limiting beliefs that have been hindering our growth and prosperity. Therefore, it is absolutely imperative to take action immediately so we can live the life we deserve and desire.
