The importance of achieving clarity as to what we want in life cannot be overstated, but it usually cannot be achieved unless we first tend to our basic needs and attain presence. With that said, if we do not have a goal and the basic understanding as to why we desire that goal, then we will continue to remain in the position we are in. Believe me, I speak from personal experience.
Why?
The insightful Zig Ziglar once said, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.”
This is one of my favorite quotes because the message could not be more true. How do we know if we achieved our goal or desire if we do not have clarity as to what the goal or desire even is? Neglecting to achieve clarity can create a never-ending cycle of lack of fulfillment and purpose in life.
How?
One exercise that can be performed is to draw three columns on a piece of paper. In the first column, list at least five goals (list more if desired) that you want to achieve during the next year. Be as specific as possible (e.g., “earn $20,000 more this year” versus “make more money”). In the second column, list the reason(s) why you desire each goal. Once again, be specific in your reasoning as that will cultivate an intentionality behind the goal. In the third column, list the action steps you will need to take to achieve each goal. Make sure to take account of any foreseeable adversity that you will encounter, and the potential action steps required to overcome said adversity. Remember, every path to a goal has some adversity lying in wait, which effectively acts as the rite of passage during a transformational journey. Therefore, it is imperative to embrace all adversity encountered along the way.
I encountered different variations of this exercise throughout my grade school years, but the general purpose behind this exercise is still very applicable today.
